Miss Costa Rica Natalia Carvajal Gives Advice To Steve Harvey

– Posted in: Costa Rica

The 2018 edition of the Miss Universe competition was held this past weekend. While Caroline and I didn't watch it, I did see in one of my news feeds that Miss Philippines was the winner. Given that Caroline's heritage is the Philippines and we love travelling there, I of course mentioned it to her, and she recalled that this isn't the first time recently that Miss Philippines won. In fact, [...]

December 1 is Military Abolition Day In Costa Rica

– Posted in: Costa Rica

Since Costa Rica is the place we are adopting as our new home away from home, one of the things we would love to learn more about is the history of the country. One of the things that makes Costa Rica unique is that it has no military. From LA Times: To this day, Costa Rica has no army, navy or air force, no heavy weapons of any kind. There [...]

Jenny Méndez Wins Marine Corps Marathon And I Add 2 States

– Posted in: Wellness

Marathon season comes twice a year, in the spring and the fall, and we are now finishing up with the 2018 fall season, exciting for me because I added two states to my total (I now have a marathon in 15 states), and for fans of Costa Rica, a Tica (Jenny Méndez) won the Marine Corps Marathon! First, a bit about Jenny Méndez. She is 38 years old, born in Columbia, but [...]

New York City As Seen On A Long Run

– Posted in: Wellness

I've written somewhat tangentially about running the Maine Marathon last week. In the lead up to that race, a few weeks ago I ran an 18 mile training run. Since my summer training had been so bad and I had a hard time getting long runs done in the abnormally humid weather, I needed to downgrade my runs and incorporate regular walking breaks. I set myself up to run 12 minutes [...]

Our Weekend in Portland and Brunswick Maine

– Posted in: Travel

I recently wrote about how I go about finding the best AirBNB unit for a trip, when planning to visit Portland. Well, that trip finally came around this past weekend, so that I could run the Maine Marathon. Sidenote - the Maine Marathon is a great race. Super friendly people, beautiful course, and we lucked out with some great weather. My race wasn't great because I've dealt with recent injuries [...]

How To Research A Property Manager For Your Rental Property

– Posted in: Real Estate

In a previous post, we wrote about why we are considering selling some of our rental portfolio, specifically our properties in Indianapolis. One of the alternatives to selling outright would be to change property managers. While we wouldn't realize cash from a sale if we continued to hold these properties (one of our key reasons for selling is to deploy the cash from a sale into other investments), switching out [...]

Excursion Friday: Donald M Kendall Sculpture Gardens in Purchase NY

– Posted in: Excursion Friday

We had a few hours to kill on Sunday and the weather was finally starting to turn a little cooler. We've been pleasantly surprised at all of the great places we've found to visit within an hour of our apartment, and we were hoping to find another one. Google Maps searching turned up the Donald M Kendall Sculpture Gardens, which is in Purchase, New York, on the grounds of the PepsiCo world headquarters.

How I Found An AirBNB Unit For Our Trip To Portland Maine

– Posted in: AirBNB
smart phone that says welcome to airbnb

After a year of being focused on the 'hosting' side of AirBNB, this week I was able to focus a little bit on the 'travelling' side of AirBNB! We'll be spending a few days in Portland Maine in the end of September for the Maine Marathon. Since hotels are expensive we found a great AirBNB. Read on for tips on how to narrow the fire-hose down to a just few options that would be perfect for you.

Houston – The Rest Of Our Trip

– Posted in: Travel

We were in Houston because Caroline was a featured speaker at the AAJA conference. Since she spent time each day at sessions of the conference, and I spent time working on my own things, we didn't have time to fully get out and explore, but we did find the time to do something interesting every day. We explored the Japanese Garden, caught a game at Minute Maid Park, and enjoyed a great local restaurant.

England Holiday – Our Seven Day Itinerary And Highlights

– Posted in: Travel

Last year, Caroline and I took a trip to England with our younger daughter over her spring break. We've been wanting to take a trip to Europe for quite some time, with the intent of exploring some countryside and sights outside the big cities and looking forward to going at our own pace and interest by renting a car and driving around. We settled on England because Manchester is where [...]
