While there are many great places around the world for people to spend their retirement or in an effort to downsize, or become financially independent, Caroline and I have come to love Costa Rica. It is reinforced on a regular basis when I hear about Costa Rica in the news.
Here are some of the interesting things I have seen over the last few weeks:
- While deforestation is a problem is many places around the world, Costa Rica has doubled its forest cover since the 1980. The Africa Report shares how Costa Rica did it. (from The Africa Report)
- First hand report from a Twin Cities resident on her five-day trip to Nosara, calling it “a Blue Zone, a green destination and a white beach wonderland.” Living The Pura Vida In Costa Rica: Sun, Surf, Yoga. (from Twin Cities Pioneer Press)
- Costa Rica is working to become plastic-free and carbon-free by its 200th year of independence, which is 2021. The country plans to eradicate single-use plastic and replace it with alternatives that are either 100% recyclable or biodegradable. (from Nation of Change)
- While you might have to forgo some of the comforts we are used to, this first-hand report praises what is most important, the actual medical care! Good to know that the hospitals and medical systems in Costa Rica are higher tech than you might think: Healthcare In Costa Rica – Top Quality And Affordable. (from International Living)
- And finally, Costa Rica is the worlds largest exporter of… Butterflies! About 100 varieties are exported out of 1500 species present in the country. One exporter maintains a set of 900 trees that are favorable to producing butterflies. (from The Costa Rica News)

We are Scott and Caroline, 50-somethings who spent the first 20+ years of our adult lives in New York City, working traditional careers and raising 2 kids. We left full-time work in our mid-40’s for location-independent, part-time consulting projects and real estate investing, in order to create a more flexible and travel-centric lifestyle.
Financial independence and early retirement is not something we originally focused on, but over time realized it was possible. Our free report,
