If you look closely at the image above our window in New York City, you’ll see a bit of snow on the ground, and snowflakes in the foreground of the building across from us. You can’t see it, but we can also hear the wind howl. It is March 2, and March is definitely coming in like a lion! A nor’easter forecasted to be fierce and destructive is currently affecting all of the northeastern United States. While the rain and snow is supposed to end today (Friday) it is still forecasted to be very windy Saturday and Sunday.
The silver lining for Caroline and myself is that we will be traveling to Costa Rica on Sunday to check in on our AirBNB rentals and take care of some other business!
This is really the best time of the year to be visiting Costa Rica, and particularly the Guanacaste region, which is typically very warm and very dry. In fact, it is unusual to see any rain in the months of January through March, as you can see from the chart below.
This of course makes Costa Rica a popular destination in the winter months and so it can be very expensive to fly. As an illustration, friends of ours are in Florida this week and were considering to come with us since the flight to Costa Rica is short from Florida, however, the flights were over $800 each! Very expensive.
But if you plan a bit ahead, you can find reasonable fares. We booked our tickets in early January, about 8 weeks before the trip date and paid just under $500 each to Liberia from New York City on JetBlue. I always appreciate when I can find decently priced flights to Liberia because then it eliminates the long drive from San Jose, and possibly a car rental, and possibly a hotel stay in San Jose depending the times of the flight.
Hopefully the airline gods cooperate with us on Sunday, and instead of dealing with the cold and wind in the aftermath of the Nor’easter, we’ll be enjoying the fine warm and dry weather at sunset on the beach at Tamarindo Sunday night.
