Governor’s Island is a place I visited several times when I was in junior high school, when Governor’s Island was still owned by the Coast Guard.

It has since been turned over to New York City and is a public park with lush picnic grounds, ample benches along the water with views of the Manhattan skyline and Statue of Liberty, two lookout hills, historic buildings from the island’s military days, and various events, arts and environmental activities.

It costs just $3 per person to ride the ferry (round trip), and the fee is waived for early morning Saturday rides.

We visited on a Friday, and most activities are weekend only, but it was still an amazing park. We spent two hours strolling around the outer loop, visiting some of the structures, and climbing the lookout hills.

As a special bonus, the Queen Mary 2 was docked just across the river, which is a pretty rare event!

An unexpected treat – the Queen Mary happened to dock in Brooklyn that day, and Governor’s Island gives you a clear view
